The Coorg Institute of Dental Sciences, Centre for Forensic Odontology conducted a hands on work shop for the police force of Kodagu district on the topic of Forensic Odontology- ‘Evidence and Applications’. This is the first ever workshop of its kind to be conducted in India whereby police officers were given an insight on forensic based dentistry.

The program was graced by many senior police officers. The SP of Kodagu District Dr. Suman m am, DYSP Mr. Dinesh Kumar, DYSP Mr. Jayakumar, DYSP Mr. Muralidhar, Circle Inspectors, Sub Inspectors as well as around 60 police officers from all the 18 police stations within the district were present on the occasion.

The event consisted of a short lecture on Forensic Odontology, its scope in crime solving and also on evidence collection. The event also included hands on training on identification and collection of Bite marks, Lip prints and Rugae patterns. The officers were informed on the various techniques of evidence collection and various dental related evidence that can be collected. This included prostheses orthodontic appliances, brackets and various teeth samples, even those exposed to heat.

A hands-on experience was given on evidence collection as a team task to recover evidences from a recreated disaster site as well as evidence collection from a set up crime scene. The workshop will help in establishing a mutual working forum between the Institute, the Law enforcement agency and the Judiciary for the benefit of the society.
